Detailed prices, big supermarkets

Case Study | Retail | Food & Beverages

One of the largest food distribution groups in Spain, with a strong network of traditional supermarkets and Cash&Carry, is transforming its pricing strategy with flipflow. It monitors in real time, geolocated and at shop level, the unit prices of thousands of competing products. The result? Precise control of the market to stay ahead.

Challenge

Covalco, with its dual business model – proximity supermarkets and Cash&Carry – faced a key challenge in price monitoring. The company needed to analyse the price per unit and price per kilo of its products to ensure its competitiveness in the market. However, the sector was complicated:

Differences between unit and pack prices

In Cash&Carry, customers buy in large volumes, whereas in traditional supermarkets, products are often purchased individually. Comparing prices between these two formats without a proper system made it difficult to make strategic decisions.

Exclusive formats

More and more manufacturers are developing specific formats for each distribution chain, which made it more complex to analyse reference prices in the market.

Consumer behaviour and reduflation

Customers often look at the lowest total price, without considering the actual cost per unit of measurement. This could lead to a misperception of more affordable prices in the competition.

To overcome these challenges, Covalco needed a tool that would allow the company to monitor and compare prices efficiently and accurately.

Solution

Accurate comparison between unit and pack prices

Covalco was able, with the help of flipflow, to analyse unit prices independently of pack formats. The platform breaks down the information, allowing a fair comparison of costs per unit and per kilo/gram. This ensures that Covalco’s pricing strategies are competitive in both business formats.

Control of exclusive competitor formats

Flipflow allows Covalco to monitor the unique formats used by its growing number of competitors. The platform provides detailed information on both product-by-product SKUs and private label vs. private label. All this data allows Covalco to adjust its strategy and stay competitive in a market where unique formats play a crucial role in price perception.

The Carrefour pack (6x56g) is priced at 3.89€ (11.58€/kg), the Hacendado pack (6x60g) is priced at 4.20€ (11.67€/kg), and the Auchan pack (6x56g) is priced at 3.78€ (11.25€/kg). Below, a table displays price comparisons across different retailers, including Lidl, Makro, Carrefour, Mercadona, and Alcampo, showing price averages, product weight, and €/kg values.

Advanced consumer behaviour analysis

Through detailed data and real-time trend analysis, flipflow helps Covalco understand how customers perceive prices. For example, they can discover whether consumers are impacted by reduflation, choosing a product with a smaller quantity or size, even though the price remains the same (or is even higher, in some cases).
This allows them to adjust pricing strategies to highlight the real value of products and counteract the effects of reduflation, optimising both price perception and profitability.

3. Results

Since the implementation of flipflow, Covalco achieved a significant improvement in its ability to analyse prices and manage its competitive offer. The platform enabled a more accurate comparison of unit and kilo/gram prices, which optimised its pricing strategy both in its traditional supermarkets and in Cash & Carry. In addition, by being able to monitor the exclusive formats of competitors such as Mercadona, Makro or Alcampo, Covalco adjusted the prices of its MDD assortment to stay ahead of the market. As a result, a competitive improvement of 18% was observed in its private label assortment.

This tool also helped the chain to better understand consumer behaviour, especially in terms of price perception, which contributed to increasing competitiveness in its outlets. As a result of these improvements, Covalco experienced a 30% increase in the profitability of its key products (shopping basket) and in customer satisfaction.

To have control over the data, that’s amazing

Case Study | Retail | Food & Beverages

Leading global group in the dairy industry reduces by 65% the costs of performing Store Checks thanks to having achieved 98% in daily data assertiveness at shop level. It also achieves daily and exhaustive control of prices, promotions, availability and brand visibility, increasing its Share of Voice and market share versus both proprietary and private label brands; and involves all its teams along the way.

1. Challenge

To achieve direct visibility over the whole Mexican territory

Grupo Lala faced the challenge of controlling the vast territory of a country like Mexico, with supermarkets from many different retailers in all regions of the country. Without direct visibility of all the distributors, it was simply an impossible task, which meant hours of manual work, loss of focus for the sales team and excessive investment in Store Checks and market reports from large consultancy firms.

Optimise their analysis to monitor the actions of retailers on a daily basis

In addition, it also sought to optimise the dynamism of price analysis, promotions and assortments, allowing its Category Managers and Sales Department to have better control of retailer actions in real time. These departments relied on Nielsen’s Pricetrack tool, which gave them a 15-day delayed view of shops and limited coverage to certain supermarket chains.

Having real-time information on their brand position and competitiveness

The Marketing and E-commerce Department had another big challenge: to have real-time information on its brand positioning, to be able to analyse the brand share on different shelves/categories and with the data obtained to build comparative analyses between its products and those of its competitors. If they could achieve this, they would be able to infer the investments and strategies of their direct competitors in real time, and act accordingly.

Seeing this situation and being aware of the possibility of improving it thanks to current technological developments, Grupo Lala sought the help of a partner specialised in offering market monitoring and analysis in real time and at maximum granularity.

2. Solution

Data assertiveness and accuracy vs. Nielsen Pricetrack and in-store prices

One of the main objectives for implementing daily market analysis and its use in the Sales Department was to be able to estimate the accuracy of the data collected online at shop level and the limitations that this could entail. Together with flipflow, Grupo Lala conducted an analysis that collected data on 10 products in different shops in Mexico, both historically and in real time through the Point of Sale Managers, and compared it with flipflow data.

The conclusions of the data provided by flipflow on its platform were as follows:

  • Data assertiveness vs. Pricetrack Nielsen: 98%
  • Assertiveness of availability data: 95%.

Impacted teams:

Sales Execution

Direct visibility in a single dashboard that cross-references proprietary data in real time with data collected by flipflow

The group’s sales department, with Sellin and Sellout information, relied on multiple data cross-referencing to generate a monthly report comparing sales, prices, availability and promotional investments.

In addition, the company analyses data geographically in Nielsen Areas and also in its own internal areas, which consumed many hours of work having to adapt and filter reports.

Working with flipflow, they introduced the following improvements:

  1. Sellin and Sellout proprietary data uploaded into the flipflow platform for one-click cross-referencing.
  2. Instant visibility of data in a single dashboard and in their language.
  3. Inclusion of promotions and offers data by chain and shop for real-time variance monitoring.
  4. Structuring of all market information by their areas, which is automatically kept up to date.

  • Availability of each product per store to avoid losing sales due to stock-outs.

Market share monitoring with Share of Shelf and auditing of Retail Media deals

Grupo Lala’s Marketing Department was the first to intelligently leverage the advantages of the product offered by flipflow as a technology partner. By using it to control the visibility and brand presence by keywords in the web search engine results of different retailers, they were able to achieve all these improvements:

  1. Evaluate the positioning of their brand and products by keywords at shop level.
  2. Analyse and contrast their Share of Shelf against the competition in each retailer.
  3. Compare their Paid Share of Shelf vs. that of their competitors, inferring conclusions about competitors’ advertising investments.
  4. Evaluate the quality of their content in each retailer and be able to enrich it, thus improving their omnichannel image.
  5. Check the Retail Media campaigns negotiated with their distributors to confirm that their guidelines are correctly applied on a daily basis.
  6. Analyse on which shelves their products and those of their competitors are presented, drawing conclusions about consumer behaviour based on the Digital Shelf analysis.

Since Grupo Lala signed its alliance with flipflow, it has experienced notable improvements in many areas of its business. On the one hand, it has managed to have real-time information, with data from the last 24 hours for all its products in all the retailers where it has a presence, something that was simply impossible to achieve with the tool they used before.

They have also achieved greater coverage of their business, as flipflow offers them visibility in retailers such as Sams, Uber Eats, Rappi, Amazon and cash&carry chains, whereas Nielsen PriceTrack does not offer this data. This complete information helps them to negotiate better conditions and improve margins. And, in addition, with this visibility, they obtain complete information about their competitors in the same shops and retailers to implement strategies quickly and effectively.

On the other hand, the savings in time and resources that the use of the flipflow platform has achieved for Grupo Lala is also significant. he execution time for cross-referencing information has been reduced by 98%. For example, the data analysts in the Sales Department used to take around 4 hours a day to cross-reference all the information they had (both proprietary and that obtained from the Nielsen tool they used) to produce their reports. With flipflow, they can get these reports in as little as 2 minutes.

The time spent by Category Managers to understand the competitive situation and performance of their products has also been drastically reduced, from having to wait several days for reports to being able to view them on a single dashboard on the same day. This has enabled unavailable products or new competitor launches to be detected quickly, allowing a much more agile reaction.

The costs for store checks have been reduced by 65%, allowing them to use the amounts that were previously spent on price raids to invest in other areas with a return.

Omnichannel presence, global image

Case Study | Retail | FMCG

A global leader in several FMCG categories, keeps its brand image carefully controlled, with all content perfectly in place, on various European marketplaces. In addition, it ensures leadership in the Buy Box of these marketplaces. It also manages to maintain its dominance in the Digital Shelf, controlling search terms, categories and keywords in both paid and organic.

1. Challenge

Achieving a strong and coherent brand identity

In today’s omnichannel context, customers look at purchasing options in both the physical and online environments interchangeably, perhaps ultimately converting in another channel. This means that large companies such as Unilever need to have a strong brand identity and brand consistency.
The company started using flipflow with the challenge of achieving this brand shielding and brand consistency in terms of content, images or presence in advertising campaigns in key channels across Europe.

2. Solution

Full control of Compliance and Retail Media

Unilever fully controls, through the compliance and quality module that the flipflow platform provides, the content of its products in all sales channels. Through a series of rules set by the leading group, they have created their own metascore, with which they check that their product pages are complete in terms of content, and that these are correct in terms of text (title, description, bullet points, etc.) and visual content (number of images and main image). On the other hand, they also monitor Retail Media thanks to our platform, having real-time information on sponsored products, banners and all types of advertisements to reinforce their position and draw the best advertising strategies, while keeping under control the daily actions of their competitors.

Digital Shelf monitoring across Europe

The global leader in various FMCG categories monitors with flipflow the Digital Shelf on several marketplaces across Europe. It evaluates the presence of its products in categories and search terms, measuring their ‘Share of search’ and ‘Share of Shelf’.

They have also implemented what they call ‘Search performance’. Thanks to a set of rules they have established, they try to ensure that their products are always positioned at number 1 for the keywords they are interested in. Unilever is not interested in their product appearing at number 1 for a keyword they do not control. They want it to appear well positioned for the keywords in which they are investing money, which they know are the most used by consumers and which bring in most of their Sellout. For each product, they have assigned a series of keywords to monitor and position.
With our Digital Shelf tool, they monitor both paid and organic searches for all the brands they own in each of the countries they are interested in. They also monitor the number of shelves on which the product is found. And they can do all this on a daily basis, thanks to the real-time information update provided by flipflow.

Maintain sales leadership by controlling Buy Boxes

With a simple control panel, Unilever controls at a glance its domain in the Buy Boxes of the marketplaces in which it operates in each of the European countries of interest. Thanks to the use of filters, they can see the number of products positioned, the number of times they have won the Buy Box, the number of times they have lost it and whether the product is in stock or not. And all this for each of their brands, by marketplace and country. With these measurements, they achieve exhaustive control to ensure that the sales that are generated go to their authorised distributors and maximise their 1st party sales, at the same time as avoiding conflicts and unauthorised sales.

With the main objective of having constant, real-time market information, the brand began to find out what its distributors were doing and how its competitors were performing.

1. Challenge

In many instances, category managers still conduct market research and identify customer consumption trends by studying assortments manually. This has an impact on working hours that could be significantly reduced with the use of a market monitoring and analytics platform. This platform provides accurate, granular, actionable, real-time product information on exactly the types of products they need.

The company started using flipflow under the main objective of having information about the products manufactured by them (prices, promotions, quantities, positioning on digital shelves and availability) on a constant basis. Also to study the novelties that compete with their products, reduce manual work, innovate and have better arguments for negotiations with their customers.

1. Challenge

Controlling a large territory, with supermarkets of several retailers in many different postal codes, can sometimes become tedious and complicated, even more so if you don’t have direct visibility over the entire market. This results in hours of manual labor and physical store visits that would be drastically reduced with the use of a market analytics platform that provides geolocated, accurate, and actionable information in real time.

The company started using flipflow with the main objective of having visibility on the assortment and out-of-stocks of each of the supermarkets in which they distribute their products, located in different geographical areas of Spain. In addition, with the automation of reports, they expected to be on time and remain leaders in the industry.
